
Conservative activistĀ Charlie Kirk, 31, wasĀ shot in the neckĀ Wednesday afternoon while addressing a packed rally atĀ Utah Valley University in Orem, sparking panic and chaos on campus.
The Shooting
Kirk, founder ofĀ Turning Point USA, was speaking to students during the kickoff of hisĀ Great American Comeback TourĀ when a gunshot rang out.
Disturbing footage from inside the venue shows Kirk flinch violently before snapping back violently before falling into his chair, with blood visible from his neck. Students screamed and scrambled for safety as bystanders rushed toward the stage.
Witnesses said the shot came just minutes after Kirk had been tossing hats into the cheering crowd.
āPeople were there. And there were lots of them. You know, he came out, he was throwing hats, riling up the crowd,āĀ former Utah congressmanĀ Jason Chaffetz, who was in attendance, told Fox News.
Suspect in Custody ā But Confusion Remains
Campus officials confirmed a shot was fired toward the stage. An alert sent to students said aĀ suspect was in custody,Ā and footage appeared to show officers leading away an older man in handcuffs.
But in aĀ conflicting account,Ā a UVU spokesperson later told international outlets thatĀ no suspect was officially in custody, highlighting uncertainty over the situation.
Kirkās current condition remains unclear. He was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
