Diogo Jota: A Heartfelt Tribute from Wolves

Diogo Jota spent three unforgettable seasons at Molineux, joining Wolves at the start of their Championship-winning 2017/18 campaign. Instantly adored by fans, players, and staff alike, Jota became a beloved figure whose legacy at the club remains deeply cherished.

During his time with Wolves, Jota made over 130 appearances and led the team in scoring in his debut season, playing a crucial role in their stunning promotion to the Premier League.

Matt Wild, Wolves’ director of football operations and administration, reflected on the devastating news of Jota’s tragic passing:
“We are all in complete shock. Losing Diogo is heartbreaking enough, but to also lose his brother Andre is truly unimaginable. He leaves behind his wife, their three young children, and a grieving family. It’s difficult to comprehend how sudden and tragic this loss is, and it will take time for everyone to come to terms with it.”

Jota’s influence at Wolves was profound. Despite only being with the club for three years, his contributions helped drive the team’s most successful period in recent history—from winning the Championship, to securing Premier League stability, and competing in Europe.
“Diogo embodied everything Wolves stand for—humble, kind, professional, driven,” Wild continued. “From a young talent to a Liverpool star, his journey was a testament to his character and determination.”

Born in Porto, Jota began his career at Paços de Ferreira, making a significant impact at just 17 with a goal and assist on debut. His talent quickly caught the attention of Atletico Madrid, who signed him in 2016. That same year, he returned to Portugal on loan to play under future Wolves manager Nuno Espírito Santo at FC Porto, where he continued to rise as one of the country’s brightest prospects.

In a bold move, Jota swapped the Champions League for the Championship, joining Wolves in 2017. Initially on loan, he soon became a permanent fixture, quickly establishing himself as a modern Wolves legend.

His debut season saw him net 17 league goals, firing Wolves back into the Premier League after a six-year absence. Jota’s skill, work ethic, and grounded personality made him a fan favorite, and his contribution to the team’s success will forever be remembered.

Wolves Chairman Jeff Shi said:
“Diogo was not only one of the finest players we’ve seen in the past decade—he was also an exceptional person. Smart, kind, and quietly driven, he lifted those around him. He didn’t need to shout to lead; his presence and actions said it all. He was also incredibly clear-headed and thoughtful—he had all the makings of a future leader beyond football.”

As a permanent part of Wolves’ squad, Jota helped the team to consecutive seventh-place finishes and a remarkable Europa League run, where he scored nine goals, including back-to-back hat-tricks against Besiktas and Espanyol. His 13-minute treble against Besiktas remains the fastest European hat-trick in club history.

Jota’s international career flourished too. He earned his first of 49 Portugal caps while at Wolves and was part of the 2019 UEFA Nations League-winning squad. He later scored in his senior debut against Lithuania in a 6-0 win.

In September 2020, Jota moved to Liverpool, where he added the Carabao Cup, FA Cup, and Premier League title to his accolades. Just weeks before his passing, he helped Portugal win the 2025 Nations League, becoming the only country to win the competition twice.

Off the pitch, Jota was a passionate gamer who founded and ran his own esports team, Luna Galaxy, and frequently streamed on Twitch. During the COVID-19 lockdown, he represented Wolves in a Premier League FIFA invitational tournament, going on to win the competition.

Tragically, Jota passed away on the morning of Thursday, July 3rd in Spain, just 10 days after marrying his long-time partner, Rute. His brother Andre also lost his life in the incident.
