Seven is Home: Premature foal, Seven, returns home after months of treatment at UT

Baby Seven the horse finishes up treatments

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A tiny foal named Seven was not expected to survive, but with the help of the University of Tennessee’s vet school, he’s now a thriving symbol of resilience.

Seven was his mom’s seventh baby, his owner, Katie Van Slyke’s, seventh foal of the year, and was bred on May 7. But he was born nearly two months early–there are few documented cases in the world of foals being born that early and surviving. Van Slyke and many veterinarians thought his chances of survival were slim. He was born so early that many of his bones hadn’t even formed yet–they were just cartilage.

Thanks to the care from the University of Tennessee Veterinary Medical Center, as well as his feisty personality, Seven is now home.

Van Slyke documented Seven’s care for almost a year, with the latest update on Tuesday showing Seven healthy and happy.

The owner shared the video below on Facebook, tagging the UT College of Veterinary Medicine, showing how the vet school cared for baby Seven. The school even shaved a Power T on him before bidding him farewell.
