ATLANTA — A 2-year-old girl died Friday night after being hit by an SUV in the East Lake area, Atlanta Police said.

APD said in a statement that the driver stayed on scene. It happened at 2201 Glenwood Ave. SE, the address for the ELLA Apartments. Police described a Land Rover turning onto a private roadway leading to the address, when “the victim suddenly ran in front of the passing Land Rover and was subsequently struck.”

Police said the child was taken to the hospital by a private vehicle but did not survive her injuries.

The apartments adjoin a Publix with a service roadway to the side of the grocery store, Google Maps shows, but it’s unclear if the crash occurred there or on another road inside the gated complex.

The crash happened around 9:30 p.m. Police did not say how the 2-year-old got into the roadway.

“Investigators with the Accident Investigations Unit responded to the scene to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. The investigation continues,” the police statement said.
